Deer Island Treatment Plant Water WellsOwner: MA Water Resource Authority
Location: Winthrop, MA
Engineer/Architect: Corrosion Probe
CSI was awarded the contract for the concrete repair and relining of four 775 square foot Wet Wells and the concrete repair and coating in an acid storage area.
The Wet Wells were initially cleaned with a heated pressure washer, then the damaged concrete was removed by hydro-demolition, which utilized up to 40,000 psi.
The Wet Well rebar was coated, concrete repaired, then lined with a specialty sewer lining made of 40 mil PVC, while the acid containment area was coated with a severe service coating, both capable of protecting against the harsh corrosives being housed.
Also included in this work was the stripping and repainting of 1,200 linear feet of pedestrian handrail which lines part of the 7 mile scenic walkway around the treatment plant.
While the difficult work inside the Wet Wells and Acid/Caustic Containment Area was classified as 'Permit Required Confined Space Work' and very dangerous, the painting of the handrails was also extremely dangerous as it was located on the edge of a sea-cliff.
