Expansion joint systems are utilized in all structures where the anticipated movement exceeds the design criteria of regular sealants. Many of the expansion joint systems available today can accommodate not only a large horizontal movement but also the differential shear caused by vertical movement.
Modern expansion joints range from asphalt impregnated joints (which are pre-compressed in the factory) to winged extruded rubber gland joints (where the wings, or perforated flanges, on either side of the joints are embedded in an elastomeric nosing.) The joints must be properly sized to the opening and the anticipated design movement over a yearly cycle. CSI personnel are trained and experienced in the installation of many joint manufacturing systems including Emseal, Watson Bowman, Lymtal, Situra and M&M systems. While expansion joints in garages and below grade applications are primarily chosen based upon performance, many vertical expansion joint systems offer additional features for aesthetic value.
